Easy word search
Six words, a small grid and only two directions: across and down. A relaxed puzzle for beginners and young readers.
A gentle start
The easy level is the friendliest way into word searches. The grid is 8×8, there are six words to find, and every word reads the normal way: across from left to right, or down from top to bottom. Nothing runs backwards and nothing runs diagonally, so once you spot the first letter of a word, there are only two places the second letter can be.
Words on this level have three to eight letters and come from the same everyday word list as the other levels. That makes easy a good choice for younger children who are learning to read, for players who are new to word searches, and for anyone who wants a quick, relaxing puzzle between other things. A typical game takes a few minutes.
What an easy grid looks like
Here is a smaller example with four fruits. PEAR runs across the top and PLUM runs down the left side. FIG has been asked for as a hint, so its first letter glows; the word runs straight down from there. LIME is still waiting along the bottom row.
A good habit to learn here: read each row from left to right looking for the first letter of a word, then check the letter to its right and the letter below it. On the easy level, that is all the searching you ever need.
Ready for more?
When six words feel too quick, move up to medium, which adds diagonal words and a 10×10 grid. Your unfinished easy puzzle stays saved, and your statistics are kept separately for every level, so practicing here never lowers your averages anywhere else. Parents and teachers will find more ideas on our word search for kids page, and you can print easy puzzles for the classroom or a trip.
Easy word search: questions
Which directions are used on the easy level?
Only two: across from left to right, and down from top to bottom. There are no diagonal or backwards words on the easy level.
Is the easy level suitable for children?
Yes. With six words in an 8×8 grid and only two directions, it is a good first puzzle for children who can already read short words. Younger children often enjoy it with an adult reading the list aloud.
Can I play an easy puzzle on a theme?
Yes. Every theme page has a level selector, so you can play animals, food, colors or any other of the 30 themes on the easy level. See all themes.
