Food word search

Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks are all on the menu here: pancake and oatmeal, sandwich and soup, taco and sushi, plus the extras that go on top, from ketchup and mustard to salsa and gravy. Sweet treats have their own desserts theme, and fruits and vegetables each have one too.

Many food names have traveled. The hamburger takes its name from the German city of Hamburg, spaghetti is Italian for "little strings," and the sandwich is usually linked to an English nobleman, the Earl of Sandwich, who is said to have eaten meat between slices of bread so he could keep playing cards. Quesadilla comes from queso, the Spanish word for cheese.

The theme makes a good starter for a conversation in an English-language class: which of these foods did you eat today, which come from another country, which are eaten hot and which cold?

Play tip: words borrowed from other languages keep their own spelling, which helps you in the grid. The QU of QUESADILLA, the GN of LASAGNA and the GH of SPAGHETTI are letter pairs that random filler rarely makes, so they are quick to find.

Questions about this theme

Are desserts included in the food theme?

Only a few breakfast items like pancakes, waffles and muffins. Cakes, cookies, ice cream and other sweets are in the separate desserts theme.

Why does the list say omelet, not omelette?

The site uses American spelling, so you will see omelet and yogurt. Both spellings are correct; the grid simply hides the one shown in the list.
