Music word search

Tune up with instruments from every section of the orchestra (violin, clarinet, trombone, tuba, cymbal) and from folk and popular music (banjo, ukulele, harmonica, bagpipes). The rest of the list is music itself: melody, rhythm, harmony and tempo, styles from jazz and blues to reggae and opera, and the people who make it, from the choir to the conductor.

The piano was first called the pianoforte, Italian for "soft-loud," because, unlike the harpsichord before it, it could play quietly or loudly depending on how hard you press the keys. A standard modern piano has 88 keys. The ukulele was developed in Hawaii in the late 1800s from small guitars brought by Portuguese immigrants, and xylophone comes from the Greek words for "wood" and "sound."

Music teachers can use the puzzle to review instrument families: after playing, sort the words into strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion.

Play tip: music has some of the oddest spellings on the site. RHYTHM has no vowel except Y, JAZZ has a double Z, and XYLOPHONE and SAXOPHONE both contain an X. Letters like these are rare in the filler, so they lead you straight to the word.
